Just saw this item relisted on ebay from Noble Spirit. While I don't collect precancels, this looked to be unique. My question is are precancels readily available on full sheets, and commemorative's at that? I don't know.

NobleSpirit NO RESERVE M2016/133 USA Pre Cancels Extravaganza Unused High CV

Would this be a good starter package?

It would be of some interest to me because I collect Transportation Coils. I doubt if there is a whole lot of interesting stuff here for a real precancel collector, but I am not sure. I believe it would have been better had the lot been split up.

This lot will sell for a good price although it is all 'modern'. At various times, rules about precancels varied in strictness but yes, there were times when these were readily available.

Waazwi, to answer one of the questions you asked. In 1969 the Post Office issued an experimental 6 cent stamp, Scott 1384. It depicts a winter scene in Norway, Maine. The stamp was "precanceled" in four different cities, Atlanta GA, Baltimore MD, Memphis TN and New Haven CT. The stamps were valid for any type of mail by the general public. That was the only time precancels were available to the public, but commemoratives could be precanceled on request by permit holders!

Thanks Petert4522 for the info. I've seen a few photos over time of a commemorative precancel but never looked much into the facts. After looking at what's being offered, there isn't a whole lot of variety for someone to use it as a starter collection. I guess I was more intrigued that there were full sheets of precancels and that there might be a few coil line pairs. Otherwise everything there I'd imagine is fairly common and available elsewhere individually and probably a whole lot cheaper.

There are also inverts of the two precancels as shown below. Note: the jury is still out on these inverts, Some say they are legitimate errors, others say they were printers waste which were 'taken out the back door'. This leaves the market value in question, you can find listings at very high prices, other times you can find them for low prices.

Well 51studebaker it looks like you've a complete collection of all the commemorative precancels according to the info found in this thread. The inverts are just frosting!

Thanks for sharing. It's always nice to learn something new.

This was the second attempt to sell the lot. First sale it went for about $1200USD. Interesting that only two buyers form the first sale participated in the second sale.

What I find sadly amusing is that some buyers faithfully up their bids in the days leading to the sale as new buyers make a bid or two. It's as if they believe they'll loose if they aren't on top right through the gavel drop, so to speak.

Thanks Don and Chasa on the added info.
