See below ebay listing. This cover does not appear to be genuine to me, particularly the font used for the date numerals in the Berlin postmark. The numbers were not slanted/italicized. Thoughts?

Hard to tell for sure without actually having the cover in hand and doing a very close examination or having it expertised by someone, but these are not terribly rare covers with Berlin cancels and you can find many images on line. Of the half dozen I just looked at from the first page of results of a simple Google search, non have italic dates - all are straight. Given that these overprinted stamps have been heavily forged as they carry a high premium, my instinct would be to pass on this auction and wait for one that does not have any red flags. The current bid is already more than I would go if I wanted to gamble and see if it is real once I had it.

The stamps are all fakes. At some point in the past, a forger made excellent copies of the zeppelin issues which are difficult to distinguish from the legitimate issues, except he made one huge mistake -- the real zeppelin issues and all overprints (Chicagofahrt, Polarfahrt, and Südamerikafahrt) will have comb perfs, which the forgeries are line.

Those on this cover are line. It's especially noticeable on the 2 Mark since it has a margin.

Also, the combination of the Polarfahrt stamps with the Chicagofahrt stamps seemed like overkill to me.

Thanks, Postmaster. I learned something new from you and it bears out my initial thinking on this being a forgery. Too bad for the person who won the auction for $260, unless it was the seller himself who was schill bidding on it.
