I have a friend who is doing some traveling in Europe this summer. She has graciously offered to pick me up some stamps whenever possible. She'll be in the following countries: England, Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Czech Republic, and Switzerland.

Can anyone offer me some advice I can give her for looking for stamps in these countries? She's brought me some from England before, no problem there. The other countries will be a challenge. I've not been to Europe myself, so I'm at a lost as to what advice to give her. She wants to know what to ask for, things like that. Thanks for any help!

Perhaps not quite the answer you are looking for, but if you collect US/Canada, why not ask her to look for classic US/Canada? Sometimes you can find bargains overseas, since fewer local collectors are interested in those countries.

This is probably less true nowadays than it was 20 years ago, thanks to the Internet giving people an accessible global market, but still true to some extent.

US and Canada are my main collecting interests. That's an interesting idea. I don't think she's going to go too far off the beaten path searching for stamps. Any advice about this would be good, too.

I've travelled in Europe. Your friend can visit each country's post office for the latest stamps. Spanish post offices are open Mondays-Fridays 9AM-2PM. One of my goals once upon a time was to collect a 1984 Europa stamp from each country I visited.
For older items, she can visit a stamp and coin shop.

What type of stamps would she be buying? Recently issued stamps available from the post office? Or less recent stamps from a stamp dealer. I am from the Netherlands. If you can also tell me which cities she will be visiting I will provide you with the proper addresses.

You should visit the Post Office site for each country and figure out which new issues will be available. I did this with a friend of mine as he visited South Africa

The central post office in Prague has a philatelic window where one can buy year-packs.

SWH...most likely, recent issues. She's going to be in Amsterdam. Yes, I have been visiting each countries postal websites. I don't know that I can convince her to search out stamp dealers. She's more likely going to hit a post office if she comes across one.
