Finally Found A Scott # 479ii.

Hi guys..was always looking for one and was checking my stock book and came across one.

Never know what you put away for future identification...haha

Robert, for those of us that are not familiar with this and / or do not own a Unitrade, could you please explain what it is that we are looking at?

Red over black variety. The original is black over red.

Thank you Northener0. The variety is easy to see on Wert's close-up but I could not see the difference in the smaller thumbnails on my monitor. Good catch Robert!

Petert4522...Sorry, I forgot not everyone has a Unitrade book...here is the RED over BLACK that I found..Red over black on left stamp and normal on the right stamp..Hope that helps.

wert: Congratulations on you building by yourself from scratch a very fine stamp collection with many different varieties that you have found by looking closely at the stamps that you have and thank you for sharing them with us on here everytime that you do find something different. It is always interesting to read about collectors finding something.

Thanks Robert, and even though I rub you a lot I go along with Jogil's observations.
Now for a serious question. How did this happen? One would think that a press run is a press run - why would plates get swapped in midstream?

This is probably caused by an inking problem. They are common on this type of printing. If you notice the red is much brighter on the variety than on the normal stamp. Look at the third stamp Wert shows and you can clearly see the edge of the radar was printed with two colors to achieve a darker shade. On the third one the colors are slightly misaligned so you have a slight offset in the colors. Very nice trio of stamps showing why the varieties occurred.

Watermark, I am beginning to think that some plates were printed out of order...That would maybe explain RED over BLACK..When I was a printer..Black was and still is the dominant colour...Does that make any sense...??

I don't know how they set up the printing order for colors but missing colors and misalignment account for a lot of color variations on stamps printed by this method.

Where is this "red / black" thing coming from? The variety is red over blue. And on the value side IMHO Unitade has it over -valued at $10 - $20. I just sold a full pane for only a few dollars - received 3 bids I think.
