Could anyone help identify this stamp please, I know it is ugly and has a hole in it but just wondered if it could possibly be Indian.
Thank you.

Hi

This stamp is India, but, appears to be from the state of Bundi (?) The design is almost like the one in Scott's, Type A6. The border and design is not 'quite' the same as the postage example shown. This is not my area of expertise. I also think that it may not be a postage stamp, but, may be a revenue of some kind which would explain why it is not listed in the Scott's Catalogue (?) I hope this helps?

Yes, Bujutsu has you in the right direction. It is an Indian revenue stamp for Bundi -- court fee stamp.

Regarding the design, it commemorates the Maharaja of Bundi fighting the Mughal army, protecting the cows. Although it does indeed look like the cows are attacking (as Robert comically noted), I believe it's actually somebody protecting the two cows!

It is indeed from Bundi. Bundi used the design of the ruler protecting the Sacred Cows on its postage stamps as well:

(5 Rupee, SG 72)

And with the lettering modified for the 'Our Day' commemoration in 1917

And as Cash Coupons, to make up for the lack of small change during the Second World War:

And finally, as revenue stamps also:

(4 Anna, Setting 46)

The Sacred Cows even appeared in the Bundi Coat of Arms"

(SG O53-O55)

Wow, thank you very much, I have a box full of old Indian state stamps , when I get around to sorting it I will probably need help again with some of the more obscure ones. If you have any useful links to these stamps I would be grateful.
Regards
Ferret

There are plenty of resources on the Indian States online. First we need to sort out which States are involved, and whether they're postage or revenues.

I can help with the postage types and a few of the revenues: perhaps post scans so we can see what you have.
