It is an Australian State or Colonies stamp.

They go back to before Australia was a federation which happened in 1901.

But it was not until 1913 before Australia as a federated Country produced it 1st stamp being the map of Australia and the kangaroo.

There is more on this 1st page Australia "KGV stamps explained."

May I suggest that your NSW stamp is a forgery? Firstly the colour is wrong. These stamps issued between 1851 and 1854 varied in colour from carmine/red/orange/orange brown.
The 2d version of this stamp was printed in blue or ultra, much like yours.
Also note the S in POSTAGE, how wonky it is! the drawing overall seems quite crude. Now I admit the image in my 2003 Scotts catalogue isn't the greatest, but it really looks wrong to me.

Oh, and don't get the impression I'm trying to be negative. I actually really like forgeries.

Here's an image on a one penny stamp from the Stampedia web site. Compare for you selves.

It seems to be made from bluish medium wove paper. Your imperforate stamp was issued in 1851, it is rare and the catalogue value for that particular stamp would exceed AU$2,000; unfortunately it is badly torn and has no philatelic value, except for a cheap filler.

This is definitely a forgery.

Check the de Torres illustration on the stamp forgeries website, link supplied by GeoffHa, two posts up.

disagree.
Opinion:
I think it is a cut out from a page of an early stamp album, where images were printed to place stamps.

Not a "forgery" an Illustration cut from an Album page by Placido Ramon de Torres.

The page I feel it came from

Thanks Rod222, without seeing the subject article first-hand I should have posted 'definitely not a genuine NSW laureate'.

There are some features that are different to the de Torres illustration I made reference to on the stampforgeries website.

Are you able to upload a close-up scan of the relevant part of your album page so we can see how closely it resembles the OP stamp?

I didn't expect that response.. usually a lot of us have fixed views,
nice to see a shift with reference to evidence.

I see it as an illustration, but perhaps used as a forgery, if someone was to market it.

Unfortunately no, so there is still some proof required.
I felt fortunate to find the album
Right at the end under "Oceania" I recall.
