Got my little package back in the mail damaged. Since I'd ordered some of the older Indiana issues I guess I'm stuck unless I want to order more again.

I think that would be quite unusual.

A scan of what you are talking about would be most helpful, but in the interim, here is the ceremony program envelope with the machine applied FDOI cancel in the upper right. The remaining 3 cancels were handstamps available at the FDOI ceremony including the plain bullseye.

John Becker's example for the upper right cancel is not a "machine cancel". The machine cancel is slightly smaller - this one is the same size as the slogan hand cancel. Although, I don't think the USPS hand-cancelled every first day program envelope. The last example (sdtom) is actually not serviced according to the guidelines, which is the slogan cancel can be applied only once - subsequent stamps are to be cancelled by the bullseye cancel (without the slogan).

sdtom: It is unfortunate they used the bullseye only on the cover you sent in. But I think the person who applied the cancel determined that applying the slogan hand cancel would end up covering most of the stamp(s) which might would be undesirable. With ideal placement of the stamps, the slogan hand cancel could have been used. - putting the new stamp top right, the older horizontal stamp to the left, and the vertical old stamp under the new stamp with a gap for the wording of the hand cancel.

I am grateful that even though it is wrong I got one to keep for my collection. Thanks for the addvice and will keep that in mind for future covers. The next one I'll do is the old classic trucks. I had an F100 for years. Girl friends not to keen on it because it rode like a truck, not what we have today. But it always got me where I wanted to go and would start at -40.

fdcusanc, seeking clarification ... you state I am in error by calling the upper right cancel on the FDOI program envelope a "machine cancel", but comparing several examples side by side, they are all of identical positioning, extremely clear impressions, parallel to the top edge, etc., as distributed to the ceremony attendees, indicating a mechanical application or mechanically-assisted application. Please elaborate how these are done as they are clearly not done free-hand as size is not a valid factor in differentiating. All envelopes distributed at the ceremony had the 1 stamp on them on the upper right. (Yes, I then added the other 3 stamps on-site to document the hand cancels available at the ceremony.)

John Becker: Indirectly I mentioned that the cancellation on the ceremony program envelope is the same size as a slogan hand cancel, but the USPS surely didn't hand cancel all of them. With almost certainty (but no confirmation) I can say that the USPS has a mechanical process to cancel these (and other items) with the "hand" slogan cancel. The hand slogan cancel is preferred because it is much clearer than the machine slogan cancel. The standard machine cancel will leave slight indentions where the cancel is pressed into the item being cancelled. The machine cancel is slightly SMALLER than the "hand" slogan cancel.
