They are mostly not found on plate blocks after 1958. They are used by the printer to identify and account for a specific stamp printing plate for a specific stamp subject by a specific control number just like a specific stamp is identified by a specific catalogue number. They were only found on the lower left corner plate block of matched corner plate block sets of four.
The original post made me look at some of my other plate blocks (KG6 and QE2 only) and I realised that I have not seen any other control number with a letter after it as in this example. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why the K was added to this stamp.
