I'm new to stamp collecting and recently acquired several large albums. One page had a Penny Black stamp and written under the stamp in pencil it said: Mint Condition. How do you determine this? I hesitate to list it as mint if it isn't.

It would ordinarily be called "unused", as it has no gum. There is also what may be the trace if a cancellation at the NW corner.

I will say one thing either way it is a very nice looking stamp. It would go very well in my collection.

It's used, there were two types of obliteraters used, black and red, the black cancellation was replaced with red as the black was very difficult to see and some people knew how to remove the black ink. There are very fine remnants of black ink (both cancellations are Maltese Cross shaped). Your stamp has 4 very nice borders and very clean, Definitely one to have in a collection.
