At Kelleher Stamp Auction today 8-20-16 . A 51 volume Scott International Albums collection from A-Z sold for $52,500 with commissions that's over $60,000.00 that someone is paying for the collection . It is very satisfying to see that worldwide collections still can command that kind of price . It was lot 821 and had a suggested value of $30,000 to $40,000 .Maybe Bill Gates decided he had so much fun with the first collection he bought of 8 volumes that he decided after donating all his Gold Medal "gem" collections ,he would get back into the International's again and start a little bigger .

Excellent. You didn't buy it then? These worldwide collections often seem to be broken up into country/area lots, although that's much more difficult with a printed group of albums than with springbacks. I tend to see more Commonwealth collections sold intact, like this GVI one, which gives you almost everything, but at a price http://www.warwickandwarwick.com/au...logue/139631 |

GeoffHa ----I didn't buy it ,it would be 99% duplicates for me . I would of like to view it but if it is filled to the album then it would be a lot of duplicates ,but like any collection there are things I would like to pull out of it . |

What's with the Kelleher Auctions - I was watching several lots and I sent in an e-mail a couple of weeks ago to register and never heard from them!! They had some interesting Newfoundland material and a New Brunswick Connell at a very low price. I wanted to bid on a couple of things but couldn't. Has anyone done any business with them and what has been their experience? I don't have much experience with the Auction Houses but wasn't impressed. |

NBSTAMPER ----I have purchased 60- 80 lots from them over the years and always found them easy to deal with .I deal with Larry all the way back to his days with Greg Manning. They have taken back 3 lots from me ,so they know I will do future business with them . Happy with their staff ,what you need to do is set up a account and if your going to bid ,call 7 or 10 days before the auction and set up your way of bidding . Don't try to establish a account or call in the day of or two days before a public auction and try to get service from any major stamp auction firm . |

My experience as a buyer is the same as floortrader's: no problems with several transactions over the years (pre- and post-Stamp Auction Network). |

Quote: Don't try to establish a account or call in the day of or two days before a public auction and try to get service from any major stamp auction firm To expand on this, things get very busy right before an auction and they either may not have time to handle your request, or they may simply forget if they don't get to itr right awaywith so many things flying at them. |

My wife and I previewed many of the collections at Kelleher but didn't win any. Was surprised at how high the prices went across the board there. We saw the one mentioned on the shelves but didn't open it up since it was well beyond our price level.
Compare the Kelleher results to the recent ABC auction from yesterday. They had a huge number of worldwide collections and many went for their opening price with little competition. I think two factors figure into that - higher opening prices - and a huge volume so less competition on many lots. We picked up 4 small lots at ABC and looking forward to many months of sorting through them.

Different auction houses have different strategies for 'valuing' large lots. Not to mention any names but... Some will estimate low and then when lots sell for way above estimates they may crow about how good the results are. Some will estimate high and hope to catch one bid at that level, but many lots will sell below the estimate. If you watch the marketplace for a while you will see the pattern develop. The bottom line is, ALWAYS inspect a large lot and form your own opinion. It can be very dangerous to bid 500$ for a lot estimated at $500-750 - at some places.

I have looked at a number of their sold listings. Very impressive!
I knew that they were in New England. I did not know that they started
their auctions in 1885. Or that they had interests in London & Hong Kong. |

It is hard to compare firms especially one outside of New York City with a large viewing area with plenty of dealers visiting and one located in the high desert of Arizona. A more important comparison would be firms that have a lot of material which is selling their own material and those having a huge consignment material. |

I agree with these comments. I didn't mean to imply that one auction house was better than the other just that there were some lots we could afford at ABC and none we could at Kelleher. I've purchased from Kelleher a number of times and no complaints. I very much agree with the value of inspecting large lots. We bought at ABC without that but they included a large number of photos for each lot and frankly we aren't going for high-end material so took the risk. mostly just happy to get a few thousand stamps to sort through. |

Some of my best purchases were made at the wrong type of stamp auctions . Let me explain it this way . For years I purchased a lot of nice worldwide lots at RICHARD DREWS AUCTION's ,some of you who don't know his auctions ,the auctions were for highly specialized early U.S. .He had a huge following of U.S. dealers and collectors and his catalogs were 95% top quality stuff and nobody came to these auctions for his foreign material. That was my playground for years. This happen again many years later when I moved to Florida. I attended MICHAEL ROGERS Auctions , there were plenty of Asian material and China lots and had dealers flying in from across the Pacific and there was the ebay reseller crowd who bid up the bulk lots too. But I noticed a lot of nicely mounted collections and any type of research or study material got only opening low bids . But that only lasted a year or so until he closed down . So the point I am making is to look around and you may find interesting stuff at auctions not known for the that type of material and other buyers haven't notice it . |
