I have just come across 2 copies of SG165 (1937 Queen Elizabeth 1d green) with VG per fin for Victoria official use. In the image below, the left stamp is as they should be. VG reads upwards from the front of the stamp. On the second stamp, VG reads DOWNWARDS from the BACK of the stamp.

Does anyone know if this is common? It would appear that the sheet of stamps would have to have been fed into the perfin machine not only the wrong way up but also with the wrong face of the sheet up as the G is back to front as seen from the front of the stamp.

I also have the same oddity on a pair of SG 167.

Could they just have been saving time by folding a sheet and doing two stamps at once? That would still serve the user's purpose in discouraging theft.

Either that or they did a second sheet upside down?

HI as the full sheets where to big to perforate they where folded and placed under the perforating head.

This issue can be found with 4 different Positions looking front on
V at the top facing Left (E)
V at the Bottom facing Left (F)
V at the bottom Facing Right (G)
V at the Top facing Right (H)

The 2 stamps you have are position G,H rated as common in the 1993 Victorian Government Punctures Neale Scott and Bryan Toop

Well that makes a lot of sense. Just one last question. Are we talking sheets of 160 stamps or panes of 80?

I googled the book reference you gave and came up with:

http://www.perfins.com.au/pcnza/j/a100.pdf

which goes a long way with an explanation starting on page 7 and is, incidentally, co-written by one of the authors you mention.

The 1937 - 1941 KGV1 Definitive s and the 1937 - 1956 Zoological series where smaller type stamps printed in sheets of 160 2 panes of 80 separated by a gutter

I am the Co Author Of these articles on the PCNZA web page.

Please feel free to ask any Questions and if you are interested I can send a copy of the 1993 Victorian Government Punctures catalog.

Regards

Jason

Jason;

But what were actually fed into the per fin machine, the 160-stamp sheets or the 80-stamp panes?

Frank.

Hi Frank,
Yes I can send you a copy
Sheets of 160 where where folded in half and feed into the head.
15 or so rows where then punctured.
As the operator would run out of sheet to hold they then removed the sheet from the puncturing head, turn the sheet around and puncture the remaining rows.

Thanks, Jason. I figured they would not for the sheets twice for putting through the perforator. My curiosity is now satisfied, so I won't need a copy. It was rod222 who had requested a copy, just in case you had us mixed up.

Frank.
