This stamp is hinged under "Chamba" in a Scott album page entitled "Stamps of British India Overprinted for use in the Convention States".

To me, the overprint appears to be "T. S. & C.", stamped twice on the stamp.

Is this stamp really from the Convention State of Chamba, or is it in the wrong place?

It is an General Indian Revenue
Receipt 1869
It attracts a Barefoot Catalogue number 5 if 15x15½
Cat number 6 if perf 14
Wmk Crown A

CV = 35c and 10c respectively in year 2000

The markings aboard, are "theft prevention"
or commercial overprint by the company whom purchased the stamps.
The handwritten script would have tied the stamp to the document.

By the way, the commercial overprint is "T.S. & Co"

We may conject that could be
TS & CO. in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
A supplier of Tea.

As Rod says, a general revenue stamp from India.

It might have been used in Chamba, although the chance are pretty slim.

All the postage stamps of Chamba were Imperial Indian stamps, overprinted for Chamba:

Thank you very much. I suspected it might have been hinged in the wrong place; I should have done some preliminary research. It is perf 14.

Here's another stamp that is, I assume, properly hinged on the Convention States page:
one anna three pies with overprint "Patiala State Service".

Yes, that is correct.
Patiala Convention State. (It attracts its own collection study and album pages)
Aboard is one of my favourite types of cancel hammers.
A "Hooded" "Patiala State" CDS (Circular date stamp)

Aslo, be cognisant of your India General receipt stamp,
most Indian revenue stamps of this type of Magenta colour
are printed with "Fugitive Ink" to prevent miss use.

Yours is already showing some fading from soaking in water.

A collection of 1869 revenues
(I have added both perf varieties since the scan)
With sundry markings and commercial opts.

the 14 is #5 A and the 15x15½ is #5 B

do you have a 2000 edition ????, if so can you check

if only I can put my hand on a "The court fee and revenue stamps of the princely states of India" book

I see what you mean about the fading, Rod. It's torn, too.

Thank you both for taking the time to share your knowledge.

It's a personal thing, I collect torn, I have absolute no qualms about it,
I'll replace (or add to) when a better example visits.
As we see here, even the tired and weary, can be of interest, and teach us lessons.

Muse a second on a collector of "Commercial Overprints" who is looking for
a TS & Co, your stamps would be important to him/her. :)

The basic 1 Anna 3 Pies of that Patiala overprint was reprinted, as a temporary measure to cover a change in postage rates, in 1941. Gibbons (and I assume Scott) don't list the reprint on India, so they don't show it for Patiala either - assuming that it exists, at all. I have 30-odd copies of the stamp, but I haven't had the energy to go through them, and see if there are any of the reprints.

On the hooded postmarks: the smaller Convention States all used them. Jind (which never could make up its mind how to spell its name: JEEND, JHIND or JIND) not unsurprisingly had at least two types:

and

Nabha also used one:

and so did Patiala, of course

Although my favourites would have to be the Jind 'Hearts'

but some types from Bhopal run them close

but for sheer making a statement, it's hard to go past the big Bhopal types:

So much fun among the Indian States: I'm amazed anyone bothers with anything else.

Area66, the book you're still looking for is very expensive (hundreds of dollars) and there is a new and greatly expanded version under weigh. When it will appear, and at what price, I don't know.

The original was a(nother) pioneering work, and so it was a standing invitation to bystanders to pick holes in it. Not really hard, since the valuations it shows were based on scarcity, not real market prices.

I had a little trouble following the discussion about the Barefoot catalogue number....What is the correct number for my perf 14 General Indian Revenue stamp?

I would like to be able to describe it correctly, even though it might end up in a giveaway pile. I'm not going to throw away torn stamps if there might be a collector interested in having them
