I inherited my father's collection a few years ago but couldn't decide what to do with them.

I've decided to sell them, possibly (eventually) here or on ebay.

Some are worth selling singly, others I expect to sell a whole album page, eg George VI UK definitives.

How should I pack them so that they travel through the post and arrive in the same condition as I sent them ?

Pertinax, welcome to the forum. It is going to be difficult to suggest anything since you are not letting us know where you are. Also, once we know that part, we should also have a little bit of an idea as to the
(catalog) value of your collection.

I'm in the UK.

I don't have catalogs.

There's lots of stamps, mainly pre 1960. Post 1960 mainly fdcs, UK stamp books, UK presentation packs.

Pertinax: you may want to visit a local library to see if you can obtain access to a Gibbons catalog so you will have an idea of value of your items, and how to price them. Others on this site can give you an idea of what percentage of catalog value will allow you to have good sales. Also, maybe visit a local stamp dealer, if you can find one, to ask about value; or a local stamp club. Some of your material may not have significant value.

Your user name is interesting; a very obscure Roman emperor.

One practice is to put lower-value individual stamps in a glassine envelope, which has nonstick properties, backed by a thin cardstock stiffener, and mail them in an ordinary envelope. Do not over-use transparent adhesive tape; stamps do not jump out of glassine envelopes in transit.

Others use dealer cards, which are a sort of thin cardstock with transparent plastic retaining strips. It combines non-stick retention and stiffening into one unit. If you can get into London next week, try to go to Autumn Stampex for a day and see how dealers display their stock.

The basic idea is to put the philatelic item into something that protects it from sticking to the packaging, and something that reduces the likelihood of bending or folding in the post. Whether to go for all-out waterproofing is up to you, but the over-use of tape for this purpose can be a problem. Think about how your buyer will open and extract the item. Don't make it hard on them.

When posting overseas, the use of registered mail or insurance often is a signal to thieves in the next country that something valuable is inside, and increases the risk of loss. There have been many posts here about that.

Something like this will give you an idea of catalogue values

http://www.greatbritainstamps.net/s...d_16632.html

but remember that you need to multiply Gibbons's price by 10%-20% for most material to get a street value. Mint decimal material has something of a floor price - around 60% of face value - because you can use it for postage. FDCs are, in general, a drug on the market, but there are exceptions. Post a few scans of the earlier material.

GeoffHa,
How does Gibbons value relate to the prices shown on http://www.greatbritainstamps.net ?

Sorry - I don't have recent enough SG catalogues to say, but I'm sure others will.
