Rod, To use negative scanning: (1) Remove the lid mat. 2. Place the stamp on the bed where the opening in the lid would be when shut (the white part of the lid in this drawing). It may take you a couple tries to get it in the proper spot, as the lid opening is pretty narrow. 3. In your Epson Scan software, you have to change a setting to enable negative scanning, but it will depend on which version of Epson Scan you're using. It could changing the Document Type and Film Type like this: Or in the newer versions, it could be changing the Scan Mode to Transparency - Negative. |

Very strange. Look at mine - all denominations - center panel backgrounds & lower right arabic/circle denomination scripts... |

Not in revenue catalog.
Found a few others - used & mint - different denominations - all look like mine - not yours.
I was ready to say you've got a major error - until I saw the 2nd one?? Did you get these together, in the same lot? Does your Isfila offer anything different?
Very bizarre, to say the least... |

Michael, yes I bought them in the same lot.
As I said, I could not identify the 1 Piastre in the auction scan, and took a gamble, I wanted the stamp to study. I think I paid around $2 for the lot.
I have emailed Dr. Andreas Birken regarding the "Turkey in Asia" piece, if he responds, I'll send him these extra 2 as well.
Otherwise I shall pass images on to ONEPS for their next bulletin, replies may take 3 months.

Postmaster, Quote: Is the scan button still grayed out afted you draw boxes around the stamps? I cannot get a carousel around the stamps, as when I go into negative film option, when I try to do a "preview" of the platen, the program aborts. I'll give it a second shot today and post back a detailed report. |

Anybody willing to help me out here? I think the one on the right is Scott #23 2pi orange red, but what's the one on the left? At first I thought it was an unused copy of Sc23, but the star and crescent looks a bit different, in addition to the color. |

Chris, could you offer the perforation guage, please?
Caveat: Newbie using his new Catalogue.
Both look Sc#23 Isfila base stamp #49: Dulos Type lll 2 piastre Base colour "Brick" Guaging should be P13.25.
The Left hand stamp looks strange with the black/grey colouring...anything on the back ? The Right hand also, with the orangish colour top of stamp ?
That's about as far as I can call on my limited knowledge.
Update:
Dr. Andreas Birken notes (If I translate German correctly)
This exists in Light to Dark Red, and Light to Dark Brick. So you may have a shade Chris.
Due to the standard of the ink/printing, I cannot call any as forgeries, most of the tell tale signs are not visable.

Hi Chris,
They both look like perf 12 to me - (stamps are damaged & hard to tell - you really shouldn't let your dog play with your stamps!)
I'll say they are both Scott #37 - Isfila #82.
Scott #23 / Isfila #49 - as Rod pointed out - are perf 13 1/4 - 13 1/2 - and generally clean / distinct.
These were very poor quality in terms of printing/production - and there's lots of variations in them. (There's actually an entire specialized catalog on these stamps - if you're interested, just send me an email - happy to send it to you.)
Both of your stamps are the 'no ray' variation - there are no 'rays' coming out of the star in the middle of the design. (If you compare to another stamp in this series, you'll see it immediately.) The one on the right also has a shift in the overprint - it's shifted to the left. This is an uncommon variation.
The color shades/variations on these stamps are numerous. Wild variations. Just really poor quality ink... |

Quote: Rod - it's been 2 pages & 11 days...any chance of getting up to date cat value on my new Isfila KN 14 booklet?? Michael, it appears as if I have perhaps misled you, unintentionally. My 2016 Catalogues do not cover these, they cover up to 1922 (That's what I wanted, to cover the PTT overprints and Dulos issues) My apologies if I have. They have the latest Prices in catalogue form, for these. (They print a specialist book for current prices going to print, for the classics) I have checked my 2017 Scott catalogue, and the Booklet Pane of 10 is $100 US, and booklet pane of 25 is $250 US. |

Rod - sorry - yes, I didn't realize that - your new (!) cat only covers until 1922. No prob - obviously. I have 2017 scott pages for Turkey - was just curious to see the current TL value that Isfila lists & compare to mine. Clearly I should get an updated Isfila at some point - mine is 2011. I think I'll look for the 2018 or next version they publish...
Does your fancy new cat offer anything beyond what was in the original/supplemental specialized catalogs? Other than the issue of 'ease of working with them' - are you happy with it?? |

Quote: Does your fancy new cat offer anything beyond what was in the original/supplemental specialized catalogs? Other than the issue of 'ease of working with them' - are you happy with it?? Michael, Tough call right now, it is like a new car, smells good, looks smart, interior has all sorts of bells and whistles, but the driver is kinda feeling his way around. The print date is 2016 (so one would assume it served 2017 as a catalogue) That has to be the latest, surely. I am curious as to the Isfila Catalogue that serves the current material, do you have any links? I am over the moon with the brace of Catalogues, but the Isfila learning curve is daunting, currently translating Dr. Birkens treatise of the same stamps, he has great tips on forgeries etc, but that is going to take years to fully realise the potential of his work. All that aside, it's lots of fun. |
