Michael - sadly, whilst not an expert, I know a lot more about the history than the stamps! Scott, like the rest of our Virginia plantations, is a foreign land to me |

MDROTH ---Don't be surprised by philatelist/collectors buying material and not sorting it all out before buying something new to work on .I find this very common with the hobby .

Quote: Geoff - 'Turkey in Asia' - don't take it 'literally' - it is the Scott classification - which is all I meant by using it - so you could find easily in Scott catalog. It really means the temporary/new government that was established in 1920, as the 'pre-cursor' to the Republic of Turkey. Isfila calls it the 'Turkish Grand National Assembly Government' and I know it as the 'Ankara Government' as a casual term/way of referring to it.
I think of this government as akin to the 'Continental Congress' - which was the 'pre-cursor' government of the US. Michael, That's the best explanation I've seen on "Turkey in Asia"! I have always been confused by the terminology, thanks for making it clearer! |

Great discussion, thanks for asking Geoff, makes it clearer for me also. Michael, Nouri = Istanbul~Stamboul Pre WWll dealer. My enquiry 2015 Quote: (Rod - are those proofs - and 'signed' 40para stamp - yours??! If so, they're awesome! I had no idea you had that stamp! That is a good one to show!) Not mine Michael, (I wish) They were linked to the commentary I posted before on the Naval Vignettes. They were posted by my mentor, Mr. Blair Stannard from Canada way back in my early fumbling days of collecting stamps. (2003?) I thought the images of the Naval ships were so beautiful I kept them. ....and yes, they are proofs. |

Quote: And last one for now - Rod - are you trying to tell us that you've had that overprinted Florence Nightingale SS all this time???!? Sitting in your house, unknown to you??? You've got to be kidding. That's outrageous! Not as high on my list as it (was!) yours - but I've certainly wanted one for a long time. (!) I've had the un-overprinted version for years, but haven't gotten to the O/P one yet. And in a $4 box! The philatelic gods have indeed been shining on you recently!
No Michael, just received it yesterday. I bought a Cinderella Lot (I paid $2.46 ) + ship. I put in a bid the week before of 1c to remind me to bid, and it passed in. (I slept through the auction time) When I opened the package yesterday there it was. I kept an image of the lot as described, (strewn over a table) The Cinderella sheet is nowhere to be seen, possibly under other stamps. I had been made aware of it (the sheet) by a post by Floortrader, I had no idea it was so sought after. If I see another, I'll email you. PS: Michael, do you have any information on the sheet? still a bit of a mystery to me. |

Hi Rod,
McDonald gives an issue date of 1962 for the overprinted sheet with a price in 1998 of $125.00. |

Quote: That is my best ever fortune cookie in my collecting history. Um, nope. Not even best one on this thread. See page 36. Turkey in Asia #3... Gittigidiyor is the Turkish ebay site. Same silliness as all other ebay sites. (Gitti gidiyor translates to 'going...going...gone!' as an auctioneer would say!) TL 800 is roughly $200. Feel free to check that link again in 12 months...it'll still be there! But without a doubt an awesome find Rod - congrats! I'd love to see the picture you're talking about. Can't add alot more than Nigel has already stated. My isfila doesn't mention it at all. If someone has a 2016 version, I believe it may be listed - they started adding postal tax / charity stamps from the post 1959 period after their required use was ended. Florence Nightingale is a hospital in Istanbul - still in operation. I wouldn't call it a 'cinderella' - it is closer to a 'charity' stamp - a private issue charity stamp. There's a bunch of those from various charities, including familiar ones like Turkish Air Association, Turkish Red Crescent ect. There was the original sheet & then this overprinted version. If memory serves, I believe there are 2 different overprinted versions - a 1TL & your 5TL version. (?) The 5TL version is by far the one that is most scarce & pricey. I know you've been wanting one - that is certainly a spectacular find in the way you got it! You should consider it a late Xmas & early birthday present all in one! |

Quote: That's the best explanation I've seen on "Turkey in Asia"! Thanks Chris. Glad it helped. I'll suggest we have much better & more accurate sources than my grade-school stories - hopefully we can all continue to learn about this time period! Quote: I know a lot more about the history than the stamps! Scott, like the rest of our Virginia plantations, is a foreign land to me Touche Geoff...very nicely done! Please do not hesitate - we would all be eager & very excited to hear about the history. Hopefully, among numerous replies, we've been able to answer your question about the stamps & their use? The basic message was that the stamps' use was very sparse - which is one of the reasons it is such a fascinating area to collect... Quote: Don't be surprised... Not surprised in the least FT...completely understood. But one of 'this' philatelist's favorite hobbies is needling Rod! |

That's a very nice block floortrader. I've noticed the variation in the surcharge before. I don't have any blocks but I'll have a look at my single copies. |

Did a bunch of scanning tonight! (I hate scanning!) In no particular order...and not necessarily the correct thread - Nigel - if belongs in Crete, just holler & I'll be happy to paste there... Block of 10 of the 40 para Naval League Label. Actually other one is also a block of 10 of the same stamp - thought originally it was a different denomination - so didn't scan the 2nd one. But illustrates that these are not hard to find.... Block of 18 of the 5 para overprinted Newspaper stamp. You can decide how well the 'overprinter' is working! (Sorry - top got cut off a bit...) |
