Hi Nigel, so where am I going wrong? I saw Derince as a HUGE rail conglomeration, supporting the Port. |

Good point perf12! I was getting carried away there. At least Kartal had a railway station at a more appropriate date: "Kartal station was originally built by the Ottoman government as part of a railway from Kadikoy to Izmit. The station was opened on 22 September 1872." (from Wikipedia) Maybe these were just new postmark types introduced in Asiatic Constantinople including Kartal (station) and other suburban locations such as Derince? |

Quote: Hi Nigel, so where am I going wrong? I saw Derince as a HUGE rail conglomeration, supporting the Port. I guess it just comes down to the timeline. It seems the postmark was in use in Derince before the railway got there. The port and railway subsequently became established. I expect the ISFILA catalogue will give us much more information. It will be a good test! Or maybe a member here already has access to the ISFILA Ottoman postmark catalogue and can help us? |

A time line on the Railways in Turkey; (In Turkish)..Derendje is just east of Izmit on the first leg of the Hyderpasa line. The first easterly line for that matter. http://wowturkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=158112The first foundation of the Great Railway Project (Anatolian Railways), which will connect Istanbul to the Persian Gulf, was laid on 4 June 1871 with an edict and 95 km. Istanbul-izmit section was opened to operate in 1873. |
