Actually, it says "Boy and eagle" in my Stanley Gibbons stamp catalogue Part 6 France, 7th edition... not eagle I think, this bird is - Dove. Any different description in other catalogue, maybe?

The stamp shows a famous Roman statue in museum in Algeria of a child holding an eagle. Please see close up of it:

Edit: I have to thank you. now, when I read the description about this statue I learned that it shows Jupiter (Zeus) as an eagle abducting the boy Ganymede. One more stamp to my Greek-Roman Mythology collection!

Wow!! Thank you LaoPhil for this snap!! Amazing that you found this image. Not only the bird, but boy's face is far from "peace"... and now I learnt one more Greek myth, also accuracy of Stanley Gibbons. This stamp is now moved to "Ancient Rome" file in my photo album!
