Hmm, lovely. Am I right in thinking that "fine" in Europe means something different to what it means in the US, where it seems solely to refer to centring, rather than the condition of the whole stamp? If so, he's closer to a US definition!
Grading is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I don't believe in "For the Issue" grading. If all stamps of one issue have perfs touching or cutting the edge... so be it! They are all just average or poor centering. It simply means there or no VF, EF or superb stamps of the issue available.
Timm ... I agree with you 100%. Calling a stamp "very fine for the issue" is ridiculous, like putting lipstick on a pig. It is either very fine or not very fine.
