October 9 is World Post Day and the week incorporating that date is International Letter Writing Week. October 9 happens to be the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union's establishment in 1874.

International Letter Writing Week
October 4, 1959
International Letter Writing Week was initiated in the United States and was formally adopted by the 14th Congress of the Universal Postal Union in Ottawa in 1957. The program fosters mutual understanding through the exchange of letters by the peoples of the world.
The stamp design depicts a flock of pigeons flying around the globe to symbolize peace and communication.

World Post Day is celebrated each year on October 9. The event was declared by the 1969 Universal Postal Congress in Tokyo as a means to mark the anniversary of the foundation of Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874.
