I had a somewhat similar experience. Bought a plate block lot(that is what I collect) which had some random items thrown in, including a manila card containing some common revenue stamps. Tucked in that small card I found what looked like an R60b... after some thoughtful and very helpful advice from a member of SCF, I took the stamp to the PF in NYC. A very interesting experience. I even had a chance to speak with their revenue expert. A few months later a very pleasant response arrived. The stamp was genuine, without faults and graded XF 90. I was thrilled. Talk about being better lucky than good.
Given that I don't focus on revenue singles, I decided to sell the stamp to fund more plate numbering. So the stamp is now included in Siegel's upcoming "Weinberg" auction. In fact, it is the lot right before the one that is being discussed in another thread here on SCF.... you know the one that was chopped from a rare multiple to create a jumbo. Makes my heart break to see multiples chopped up like that.
