Would any members care to confirm my ID please?
I am a neophyte with early Canada, and I can use later as comparisons.
Thanks.

rod222,

To my eyes they look to be Sg 29 (1859 1c Pale Rose), Sg 74 (Medium to Stout Wove paper - Montreal/Ottawa printing) and Sg 111 (possible grey toned paper Ottawa printing)

I only have access to a Stanley Gibbons catalogue though unfortunately so I don't know the Scott equivalents.

I think you did pretty well to get the three of them for $2!!

Thank you for responding James.
I'll dig out my Stanley Gibbons and translate.
I have better copies of the first two, but wanted to snag the last (SG111)
that was a gap in my album.

Hello rod222,

I've long been curious about the Canadian penchant for collecting town cancels off cover -- something you don't see much of in USA collecting. What's the basis for it -- just simple completeness for a given region? Is there a basis for valuing such town marks? A catalog, perhaps? I've got a number of such stamps that I can post when I get over to my scanner.

Thanks

Hi Wy,
Interesting question, I cannot answer for Canadians, but for me personally, as I am sure with other collectors, Philately is the Worlds largest Jigsaw puzzle, that includes a free time machine.

My interest began by refusing to throw away or sell duplicate stamps, how else could I use them? I found postmark collecting, and just got sucked in.

My cynosure, of course is local, West Australian, some of the postmarks are old Rail sidings, no longer used, but the old timers around town recognise them, and spin a yarn. Rare postmarks are bid on with gusto
locally.

As with Dysart, Sas, with Google maps I can drop in for a day and visit...how magic is that!

A postmark from Kerala, India, yep, pop in for a visit and learn the culture.

Philately, a great big, lucky dip, you never know what you are about to meet, when you pick up that next bit of paper, with your tweezers.

A typical page from my local Postmark Compendium, fabulous work from previous collectors, down through time.

A typical Postmark auction from "Premier Postal" Australia
One can buy a swag of old stamps for $5 and with the right catalogues and knowledge, can finance your hobby....
