I do not think there is a paper variety with this stamp. I believe this is a case of poor plate wiping - the paper color is that of the ink used.

Some of the earlier Transportation Coils do this very often. Namely the ones printed on the old Cottrell presses. Almost every value of the series comes in different paper shades, but it is especially strong with the 17 cent Electric Auto. It is unusual to see this on the later coils, printed on the BEP's B, C & D presses. The 5 cent Canoe above was printed by Sennett on the Andreotti press. There are several varieties of this stamp, but no paper varieties to my knowledge.

I have noticed a tendancy of the paper on the Sennett Canoes with low gloss gum to tone slightly. This may be an extreme case from being stored in bad environment. |

Eyeonwall, that is interesting. Yaxy sent me the stamps which I received today. Under shortwave UV the color of these is totally different. A very dirty looking brownish color. I have a strip of 5 in my stock book that is also a different color ( toned ? ) but not nearly as much as the above example. It also is different under SWUV. Both stamps and my strip also glow different under long wave UV. My duplicates have been in the same stock book together since I purchased them.

Toning, of course, affects the reflected light in the visual spectrum so presume it could somewhat alter the short and long wavelength ends too. Maybe a chemical reaction in the paper itself similar to ink oxidation/sulphuration?
Peter, did you happen to notice any still-white duplicates with the totally different UV color? |

No yaxy, I have not so far. I have not gone into too deep because of the preparations for a turkey etc, but I will get back to it over the weekend I am sure.
