I have this set of stamps from Israel. Stanley Gibbons catalogue isn't much good, it tells you the Hebrew name for each letter, but not which stamp it refers to. I tried looking it up on the internet, but some are very similar.
Londonbus (or anyone else for that matter), can you tell me what letter is on each stamp or the S.G. numbers. It would be much appreciated.

Just found another one that I can't find in SG catalogue, if you can help with this one too, please.

Thanks

Steve

Steve,

I cannot help you with the Gibbons numbers as my catalogue only goes up to 2000.
I can tell you the letters from your scan although this is only a part set you show.
The sheet of 22, issued Tete-Beche and was 'accompanied' by another sheet of 10 [also Tete-Beche] which showed the letters 'Sofit'. 10 of the Hebrew letters are written differently when at the end of the word although the name is the same. Hence one says 'mem' and 'mem sofit'.
Anyway, from top left; Lamed,Mem,Noon,Samech,Ayin,Peh.
Second row; Caf,Yud,Tet,Chet,Zayin,Vav.

In Hebrew, one reads from right to left so the names I have written are not in alphabetical order !

Are you confused yet ?
If you need any more from this lovely set, just holler.

The other stamp is a State Revenue, but have no idea of year. The value on the stamp is 10 agorot, probably the lowest value issued.
{I will try to check}

Hope this helps a little.

Londonbus1.

PS My spelling may be different than Gibbons !

ì Lamed
î mem
ð Noon
ñ Samech
ò Ayin
ô peh
ë caf
é yud
è tet
ç chet
æ Zayin
å Vav

The odd thing about this sheetlet is that all the letters are written in capital except 'mem'. You can see the difference. I never thought about this much before, but it's rather odd.
You can see the difference.

The thirteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is called "Mem" and has the sound of "m" as in " mom."

The script form of Mem looks a lot like an English capital "N" but is written from right to left

Thanks Londonbus, that's a big help.
I can't see the difference with mem, it's all gobblygook to me. Sorry.

I had a feeling that single stamp may have been some sort of revenue stamp.
