Algeria is a fun and not overly expensive country to collect in its basic form. Unfortunately for US collectors, Scott leaves out quite a bit (no Parcel Post stamps, very spotty on the Precancelled stamps). If you want to get any deeper, either Yvert or Maury are really essential catalogues.

And much like the other former French colonies in North Africa, the quality of Algerian stamps post-Independence is quite high and for the most part well-designed.

If you are looking to add to your collection, delcampe is a great site since it has a very large number of French dealers, and with the weak Euro some bargains can be found for most of the French colonial and post-colonial world, even factoring in shipping costs.

By a weird coincidence, I spent this morning transferring my Algerian stamps to MOC pages - I was slightly alarmed to find that MOC provides a plethora of spaces for the Parcel Post stamps, of which I have about half-a-dozen!

I like the cigarette card - I have a pretty reasonable collection of the cards of beauties produced by Melia Freres of Algiers from the start if the century ti the 1930s.

Lastly, remembering the grim Franco-Algerian past, worth looking out Kamel Daoud's The Mersault Investigation, which is written as a response to, and a meditation on, Camus's The Outsider

Agreed, most do look handsome on Album Page, albeit, I know very little about the country.

I'll keep an eye on Delcampe, however I follow a different route, when I have a better collection of a country.
I try and get that particular country's club papers, see the adverts at the end, and deal with those members.
One gets knowledgeable replies, from more or less experts, with stamps from their duplicates, often members do not actively sell their duplicates and is a rich area for purchase.

However my Algeria is basically just passable at the moment.

More great pages - I'm enjoying how you mix your custom pages along with the Steiner pages. I've been doing the same thing but your posts have been giving me some great ideas.

Not sure where the idea came from.
I know I was always disappointed, when a previous collector, had done a page "study" and I ended up with the page of a particular stamp, replete with odd scribbles, that were illegible or missing the next page details.

I decided whomever gets my pages will have a rough idea what I am about,
(when I am pushing up daisys) before they keep or sell the material.

A lot of colletor's good work, is lost, because they keep it in memory, and not written down, Hagners create a lot of problems, when notes kept with stamps move or get lost.

Some of my inspirations come from members "Postmaster " his German pages are awesome, and "James" his personal pages on the Canadian "War tax" issues, is admirable. Beyond what I ever hope to do.

MOC pages - now manufactured by Lighthouse - are the only comprehensive pages for the whole French area now manufactured in Europe. Yvert used to do them (for the post-colonial period as well), but has now given up that particular ghost. I think Palo may do something similar. There was an excellent site called France Timbres, which offered free printable pages, but that seems to have vanished. MOC are the usual ridiculous Lighthouse price, but this is where I see my collecting being focused, so I'm gradually buying them.
