There's that sticky stinking substance called "Stamp Lifting Fluid"; I hate its smell (and it dries out very slowly) but it is useful when you need to remove a hinge safely from a valuable stamp.
The maps these were printed on are likely as stable as the stamps, so a brief soak should be fine. (I sort of accumulate these, but I haven't had to soak any, so I'm not speaking from experience.)
I'd like to say I seek out the bicolor maps, but honestly, I buy whatever I see (at a reasonable asking price).
