I have this letter and it nicely shows us how the railroads were used in the 19th century. First of all, do not look at the stamps the are terrible. The journey I think is as follows. Posted in Glarus 4 Jan. Then went to Sargans to go on the Sargans-Zurich railroad. Then went on the 5th of january on the Heidelberg-Basel railroad.(sometimes the order used in the cancellation does not follow the actual journey) then delivered from Heidelberg to Mainz were it went on the Mainz-Coeln railroad. Then I lose the plot a bit one of the cancellations cannot be read, but I think it also went on the Coln-Wuppertal Elberfeld railroad and finally to Kierspe. Personally I would not mind being a 1866 letter and making such a nice railroad journey. Kind regards, Johan.

Johan - Magnificent cover - and good forensic work on trying to track that rather complicated journey. I like it!

perf12 - thanks for that link - pdf downloaded, good reference
