How did the left stamp become the way it is? The marking faded? It's mint, so didn't go through mail.

Supposedly on these stamps it was easy to get rid of the gold imprint. I believe I can see an outline of the "3" if I blow this up quite a bit.

Do not have a catalog with me to double check, but if I remember correctly there are few issues that have gold missing error listed. This could be the one. I do not know how easy it is to remove gold from this stamp without damaging it. |

Thank you for the replies. I'm not into stamp values (yet), but I'm curious, is this error worth anything? Either way, it's nice to see the two stamps in my album side by side. |

If genuine, the 3p gold-missing error in NH condition has an assigned value of $100 in my 2012 Scott catalog. Scott includes the following warning though: "The variety 'Gold (Queen's head) omitted' can be counterfeited by chemically removing the gold."

Thanks Robert, for mentioning that note. I believe this is a case were the stamp should be expertised to make sure?

If you invert the color in a graphics program, you can sometimes see traces of the "missing" color. While not 100% foolproof, I see no hint where the gold should be. |

The likelyhood that someone will go all the way to forge it, and then I'll get it in a semi kiloware sale is low. But so is the likelyhood to find a 100$ stamp in kiloware sale. |

With a cert, the stamp has value. Without a cert, there remains uncertainty and less value.
You could just assume that it is a color missing and mount it in your album. But if you ever want to sell/trade it, you would want a cert to get its value. Don |
