I have a friend that has an example of this Port & San Fran RPO cancel and he's trying to find out what the S.D. stands for at the bottom of the dial. I know nothing about RPO's so I thought someone here would know.

Railroad (railway) Post Office, Train companies ofthen use RPO car, they was sorting the mail in those car. A some station the train was not even stoping, they was hanging the bag of mail on a pole and the train have a hook to catch them when running

I do have fews on my train layout with full interior, you can see the compartments on the wall to sort the mail , like in a real post office

Not Shasta.
S.D. = Southern Division
N.D. = Northern Division
in 1903 the dividing line was in Ashland, OR

for those who like Railroads and stamps. MINNESOTA is going to put 2 reimbursed steam postal cars back on the rail and go from St Paul to Osceola, WI. it's been 40 years since a postal rail card has been used. St Paul has the only 2 that can still be on the rails and the postal museum in Washington had one. They are bring 2 retired postmaster that used to work on the box cars out of retirement and they will be stamping on the box car while its traveling with the old cancels from long ago and a new to make the 40 years. this will happen the weekend of May 6th 2017. if your interested I can keep you posted. there will be a special envelope for that day and also some older stamps will be used. (all depends what they can find in the vault.)

diane...
Not really wanting to pick nits, but when you refer to "reimbursed steam postal cars", I believe that you're referring to refurbished or rehabilitated railway mail cars. No postmaster ever worked in the railway mail service. They proudly carried the title "railway mail clerk" and were required to demonstrate a high level of knowledge of the routes they traveled.

refurbished is what I meant sorry spell check didn't grab this . and yes 2 very old postmaster are coming out of retirement for this event.

i am only reporting what was said in our meeting. I am on the board and also a stamp collector and I am just putting out the info I have. this is going to be a huge event and not sure how far our advertising will go. details are still being worked on. but those are the facts as of now. even if the postmaster did not work on a rail car they are coming that day to stamp. how much more history can you put into one day. so for those who care about the event if you want more info I can post more as we get closer to May. Thank you very much.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I know my little nephew would love that. I live in South Dakota so we may need to take a little road trip.

Howzabout: railway postal clerks when they rode the rails, and, later, they went on to be postmasters?

When: Saturday, May 6th from 10:00am-4:00pm!
#8203;
Where: Our historic Jackson Street Roundhouse Train Museum at 193 E. Pennsylvania Ave., St. Paul, 55130

What: The Minnesota Transportation Museum is planning a day to explore train history throughout St. Paul, MN! Start your day at our Jackson Street Roundhouse Train Museum with REAL caboose rides, blacksmith demonstrations, vendors on site, a food truck on site, balloon animals and face painting, door prizes, and museum exhibits!

We will have our fleet of vintage buses offering tours of downtown St. Paul sharing railroad history along the ride (included with admission)! Our buses will also serve as shuttles from our museum to other various sites for you and your family to enjoy - Union Depot, The James J. Hill Center, and The Twin City Model Railroad Museum!

In conjunction with Train Day, MTM will be operating "The Last Mail Train". As part of the train, Railway Post Office (RPO) Northern Pacific #1102 will be functioning in its original role as a railway post office. This car is one of the last functioning Railway Post Offices in North America. It is currently one of two certified for movement on mainline rail! The train is scheduled for departure from Union Depot at the end of Train Day at 4:00pm to our Osceola, WI depot.
We are partnering with the U.S. Postal Service for the 40th anniversary of the end of RPO service. This will be the first time in some 40 years that an actual RPO postmark will be used.

We are selling exclusive items related to the Northern Pacific #1102. We have set up a shop for you to purchase your commemorative covers, postcards, and books!
