It is a Revenue stamp - and the denomination is right down the centre: 30 Sen.

Thanks tonymacg, I tried to match the stamp to stamps described in 2 excellent sources but couldn't find the match:

http://eng.ssjp.dk/rev/eng/rev/overviewrev.html

http://www.isjp.org/static/files/pd...Revenues.pdf

Are you aware of any other similar quality sources?

Thanks for posting that second link,
That is a fabulous piece of work, not seen that pdf before.
A real "keeper"

It was interesting to find out the silk moth, in the border of the 1876 revenues.

Found this dormant topic and just wanted to shed some light;

This revenue stamp (Japan) is a general revenue stamp, provisional imperforate issue from 1947. 30 Sen brown on white foreign paper, imperforate, watermark W5. Listed as #286 in Hasegawa catalogue 2019, #355 in Shimomura catalogue 1981 and #115 in Barefoot 2006.

Not an expensive stamp, but this one pretty attractive with nice selvage with edge marks.

Thanks Hironobu,

I am presuming these are from the same set 1947?

Hi Rod,

your revenues could identified as follows (Hasegawa 2019 catalogue) -

1) green stamp:

General revenue, 10Sen green, Taisho Granite paper, W-4 (1916) #228

2) blue stamp:

General revenue, 50 Sen blue, Taisho white paper, W-4 (1937) #260

3) imperforate orange stamp, 2x2 block:

provisional Imperforate, 20 Sen Orange, could be

  • lithograph, W-4 (1945) #272, or

  • lithograph, white paper, W-4 (1945) #272a, or

  • typograph, white paper, W-5 (1947) #285

4) imperforate brown stamp;

Provisional Imperforate, 30 Sen brown, on white paper, typograph, W-5 (1947) #286.

Please see this for watermarks.

Always amazed with your vast collection of revenue stamps !!!

Hironobu,
I owe you an apology, not intended to deceive,
those last stamps are not mine.

I was out bid on that design in 2017, and have been on my "Unknown" list since then. ( I never had a decent Japan revenue catalogue until scf CALSTAMP gifted me one)

Those stamp images were attempts to solve the query, from ebay listings in 2020.
$3.27 and £8.99 respectively

I ceased buying Japanese revenues when they skyrocketed in value.

Thanks for Identification, fills a large gap in my knowledge and database.
