Ephemera: ASDA =American Stamp Dealers Association. National Philatelic Show New York NY November 18th-20th 1966 Stamp dealer : W. Kolakowski Co, Poland Philatelic Agency Web Search : Author JimD I have data regarding the frequency of overprint types; months of usage; stamps which were overprinted for commercial use and the frequency with which they are found on cover. The 3rd article discusses postal history of Groszy covers within Poland. I did not initially have enough covers for an article on foreign cover rates though now have accumulated enough to do so. There is a nice booklet summarizing the Groszy overprints written by dealer W. Kolakowski written in 1950. It is still widely available from literature dealers for under $10. |

Rod, WRT the Generalgouvernement Rural Delivery stamp: In rural areas that didn't rate a post office, there were so-called "Poststützpunktes", or "detached postal agencies." The agencies used these stamps to collect delivery fees for mail that remained within the district. The stamps were attached to the back of the item and were initially cancelled by hand, and later with box- or long-cancellations from the detached postal agency. The oval cancels are favor cancels applied in Kraków for collectors. The text on the cancel is "Poststützpunkt / RYBITWY / Posrednictwo pocztowe". The Polish I believe also translates as "postal agency," and Rybitwy is the area name. I believe it's in the Podgórze district of Kraków. Ugh. The forum keeps eating the special characters. This is the Polish phrase: |

Postmaster, thank you very much. Nicely solved. I had to Google Translate, to hear the German and Polish pronounciations.
RYBITWY = Vaveetva.

Rod: thanks again for your efforts in showing your Poland collection, with highly informative comments from others. Since I posted in this thread in early 2017, I've purchased several Polish collections, including a postally used collection, and some individual items, to go along with the Poland collection I already had. Poland is one of my several specialty areas.
So far, I'm spending my stamp time this (northern hemisphere) summer working on Portuguese material. So, it will be a while before I get to Poland. I appreciate seeing some of the post World War II miniature sheets that I don't have, as well as the black ink versions of souvenir sheets. I did not know about those. Steve |

Thank you Steve, nice words. Quote: So, it will be a while before I get to Poland. Be prepared for a challenge, I have 3 albums thus far, it is a massive catalogue. (About as large as Czechoslovakia) PS: Poland comes before Portugal I updated Portugal yesterday, did all the Port.India, Moz, St Thomas, Capo Verde etc. |

Thanks, Rod. Indeed, Poland does come before Portugal. I had planned to attend the annual WESTPEX show in the San Francisco area at end of April. Of course, like for many other shows, the pandemic had other plans. That show is where I would see my primary US-based dealer for Portuguese material (the other primary dealer is in Lisbon, PT not Ohio). Since first of the year, I had been sorting and re-organizing my stuff so I would know what I already had, and then know what I needed, before going to WESTPEX. So I've just continued with the Portuguese stuff and have been working on my own Cape Verde collection for the past few weeks while continuing to sort past Port. acquisitions. And I agree that Poland will be a challenge in that it may need its own binder. Right now, my plan is to house it in a Scott International jumbo binder of "select Eastern Europe," which includes my small, retained, collections of the Baltic States and Finland through 1965, and a little bigger collection of Russia and associated areas. You're making me think that may not be a good plan. |

Steve, you may find it prudent, to collect to a certain date. Depending on your limit, I would defy anyone to limit their Poland to even 3 albums. There are say 6000 basic stamps, before even considering Air, Semi Postals, Officials etc. Then the modern problem, as years progress, so do the pages per year due to "Souvenir Sheets" selvedge (if you collect) strips etc.
A great challenge, and for most, not that expensive.

Hey Rod. Thanks again. I used a cut-off of 1965 for most of my former world wide collection as 1840-1965 is Parts I through V of the Scott Big Blue International series. I don't expect my Poland to go beyond early 1970s, based on what I currently own. My Portuguese colonials go to independence in 1974-75. For now, I'm also cutting Macau off at 1975. |
