1909 and 1920 saw uprisings in NE Persia. In 1909, Sattar Khan led an uprising against the monarchy. This failed, but set the ground for two more subsequent anti-monarchist uprisings: Azadistan, and Gilan. The latter is well-documented and was supported by the Soviet Union while it suited them. It's a really interesting and complicated period of history.

The stamps, such as they are, were probably intended to be used as propaganda tools. Whether they were ever used postally is up for debate, which is why I've posted these in the Cinderella section. Apologies for any errors in translations!

Nice. Even though they are CTO, I think the "used" stamps look so much nicer than the mint.

Floortrader, I wonder how many other people have these stamps tucked away? Both you and Justin (previous thread) have posted images. I've only ever seen them for sale once and have never seen them in any dealers. They must be out there somewhere

Thanks for updating this older thread wth belated kudos to Tim H. for sharing this! Also managed to learn a bit about a really complex chapter of history that still has implications 100 years later.

Floortrader, that's interesting to know. The Gilan stamps are reputed to have been postally used but are described as "rare". Maybe this was one such set which sold for a very nice price! Do you have any more details? We're they on cover or on piece?

Answers the question, thanks. Not postal used but contemporary cancellations. Nicely written up, too. Handy to file away with my other Gilan stuff :-)
