What is this? how do I refer to it (naming convention?)
What branch of the US catalogue
Would it be listed anywhere?

In the Scott catalog there is a section called Computer Vended Postage, which will have this stamp listed.

Rod, that stamp is from a company called "Stamps.com". They sell discount postage on the internet, all perfectly legal. Like your Australian counterparts,these are possible with customized pictures in them. Here in the States they advertise on TV with the slogan "You will never have to go to the post office again".
If interested I can send you one that is actually used in the mail, on cover.

Peter, very generous, however I am losing the battle with material to be dealt with,
I have a huge carton of stuff.
There is no end to this hobby.
