Hello

During 1990 and on, Maltese stamps in cents value got a dot above the "c".
I didn't find any currency change at that year.
Does anyone know why they changed it?

Hi Rob Roy,

The Maltese word for cent starts with a "c" with a dot.

I wonder why they didn't always spell this way on stamps after decimalisation.

Fascinating,
never noticed this prior.

1972 changed to decimalisation.
2008 changed to Euro.

I have examples of the "dot over c" 1990-1999 in my small Malta collection.

I guess it was just a matter of whether the "c" was considered to be an English language abbreviation for "cent" or a Maltese one for "centezmu" (with dots on the c and the z).

Perhaps there had been angry letters to the newspapers in 1990 complaining that the dot should be used so a policy was put in place to use the dot.

However, I've just had a look at some Maltese booklet covers in the SG Cyprus/Gibraltar/Malta catalogue and I see they all use "c" up to 2008. Most but not all of these were worded in English.
