Firstly this kind of thing is unlikely to be a forgery (although a few contemporary and modern forgeries exist).
Secondly they are unlikely to appear in any of the major catalogues, though they appeared in the Handbook of the Croatian Philatelic Society (usually known as the Prirucnik) vol. 3.
At the end of WW1 there was a period of 18 months before the new state of Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (SHS) was awarded firm boundaries in the settlement of the Treaty of Trianon. Until then the ownership of a number of places on the border between the SHS and Austria/Hungary was disputed.
In some places e.g. Beltinci, Prekomurge, Mursko Sredisce & Prelog, captured supplies of Hungarian stamps were overprinted SHS. These were generally done without any official authority. In some cases they may have had local postage franking power. More likely they were done for political reasons, making clear the demand from the area for incorporation into SHS, or even more likely, cancelled by favour to milk stamp collectors.
If I had to have a guess at the origin of this one I would say Mursko Sredisce in the north of Croatia - but I offer no guarantees. |

Hi guys! As an official expert for stamps and postal history of The State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs (SHS) I can confirm that the stamp featured above is genuine. It's a hand-made overprint SHS for the local issue of Mursko Sredisce (a small city in Medjimurje region in the far north of Croatia). Hand-stamp utilised for overprinting was made of cork, and this is the reason why the overprint looks different on almost every stamp. Since stamps valued only 629,61 Korona were overprinted most of which were lost during following decades, genuine stamps of this local issue are extremely rare. In a mint condition (without any flaws) this 80 filler stamp would be worth at least 300 euros. Here is a sample from my collection. |
