The Book of Heroic Failures

Rated by the Irish Times as the funniest book of the year, this highly entertaining paperback includes a suitable story for this column.

It concerns a postbox fixed to a telegraph pole in Ballymacra, County Antrim.

When the time came to replace the telegraph pole the workmen found that they could not release the fixing clips. So they lifted the box bodily off the old pole, and slid it down the new one. Unfortunately, the new pole was thicker, so the postbox came to rest, properly secured, some nine feet above the ground.
It remained in that position for three weeks during which time it continued to be used with the aid of a step ladder.

Looking at the Irish stamps from the late 1960s and especially 1970 is quite emotional.
I started to specialise in Irish stamps as a 18 year old in 1970. The dedication in the first volume of my albums states 31st October 1970.
My Irish collection now comprises 10 black albums for the period 1922 to 2000 and 12 red albums and 2 red albums for the period after the new millennium (actually I need a couple more black albums as there is an overlap of black and green. I use a new page for every issue and I include commercial mail covers where possible. But I think this also reflects the amount of new issues. I am now lucky if one album will hold a single year.
THere is no special reason why I changed from "black" to "green". But in a way it marks (almost) the difference between the 20th and 21st centuries. And Stanley Gibbons no longer publish my album in black.
I actually gave up collecting stamps in 2001, too many issues...and I did not start again until March 2012. It was a heck of a job catching up on all the mint and used issues 2001-2016 when I got caught up. It was a very big job as my wants list included miniature sheets, booklet stamps and ordinary and chalk varieties of definitives.
I was helped by a very tolerant wife and had the time (I am retired). With two or three exceptions I have all "Irish Irish" (sic) stamps mint and used and I am only missing about 20 "British Irish stamps" (ie Seahorse) mint and used.
The interesting thing I have always found is that stamps are not just about a person or event. They are as much about the year in which the event is commemorated. Thus 1916 Rising is as much about 1966 and 2016.
We are almost thru a "Decade of Centenaries" which has included Easter Rising, First Dáil, Gallipoli, Somme etc. So it is second time around for many events and people. But this year 2020, people like MacCurtain, MacSwiney and Kevin Barry will not be directly commemorated.
