Need some help and input. Thinking of getting a friend's 6-year old daughter a stamp collecting kit for her birthday....mainly for USA stamps. I know very little about what is even available for kids anymore. Back in the 1970's, I remember my brother and I going to the local 5 & 10, and they had a section of coin folders, Harris stamp albums, and various supplies. The image of the Harris Freedom Stamp album that my brother started with comes to mind.

Most albums I do find are ones for those who are more advanced with their collections. But, I cannot find anything "basic" that was so readily available years ago. The closest I do find is a beginners "World" stamp album. But, like I mentioned, I want to stick to USA for right now to see if she takes any interest in it. Hopefully, the album is current so that she can cut stamps off of envelopes and match them to ones in the book.

I guess my main question is do these albums/books exist anymore?

Thanks! The Harris Patriot looks like something I was thinking of.

I would go with the Patriot, too. But you may also want to consider some stamp supplies to go along with it sic: hinges, tongs, catalog (you can get one from Mystic for free), and of course, some USA stamps!

If you're near a Hobby Lobby, they have some stamp collecting supplies, including album(s), appropriate for beginners. If you go to their website, you can get a 40% off coupon (also in their Sunday newspaper ad).

Would you consider something you print out? The American Philatelic Society has a number of downloadable "albums." A lot of different topics. Here's the link:

My girls have a couple of start albums. The youngest is 6 and the twins are 8.

I found that Vario pages was the best route to get them started. They still struggle with mouths/hinges. One of the twins has taken a more serious interest in the hobby, and we've purchased her a stockbook, at her request. When she wants a pre-printed album, we'll cross that bridge then.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments and suggestions! Obviously, there are many more items out there for kids than I had thought! Now to decide which way to go. All of your suggestions are worth considering. This is what makes this forum so great! Thanks, again!

Cougar01,

I know this is tardy but I see an ad by Mystic on this website that specifies a US album, stamps, and supplies for $14.95. Too good to be true?
