Stamps With Coins?

Triton is a mythological Greek god, the messenger of the seas. He is the son of Poseidon, god of the sea, and Amphitrite, goddess of the sea, whose herald he is. He is usually represented as a merman, having the upper body of a human and the tail of a fish, "sea-hued," according to Ovid "his shoulders barnacled with sea-shells." Itanos was an ancient Greek city in Crete, mentioned by Herodotos in his History. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a coin of Itanos featuring a portrait of Triton, engraved and printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., and issued for use in Crete (then under British administration) on February 15, 1905, Scott No. 78, SG No. 105.

PS Some of you may recall Triton's helpful role in the 1963 movie Jason and the Argonauts, featuring special effects by Ray Harryhausen; see photo below of Triton holding back the Clashing Rocks.

Israel's first stamps were issued on May 16th, 1948, the Day Independence was declared, and the design was based on Ancient Coins from the Jewish-Roman War and the Bar Kochba Revolt.
They were the work of prolific designer Otte Wallish who took just 24 hours to complete his work.
Printed clandestinely because of the British Mandate, on basic printing presses, the first stamps did not bear a Country name as one had not been chosen at that stage.
So Doar Ivri [Hebrew Post] was chosen based on the German 'Deutsche Post'.
Printed on low quality paper of differing shades.

Otte Wallish also designed the first Israel Miniature sheet, again based on Ancient Jewish Coins.
Commemorating 'Tabul', the first National Stamp Exhibition, the Imperforate Sheet of 4 stamps was sold one per visitor upon entry to the Show.

In December 1949 a set of six coin stamps, similar to the one in the Miniature sheet, was issued. Once again the work of Wallish, 4 of the designs were re-issued in May 1950 in Booklets.
The sheets printed for making up the booklet panes were printed Tete-Beche.

Last day of the decimal halfpenny coin ... postmarked at Halfpenny Green in the West Midlands. This was the second time that Halfpenny Green featured in a "Farewell to..." as the previous LSD coin was "farewelled" in 1969
