Choose your collecting area based on what interests or inspires you the most. Choose a particular country or region you are fond of for personal/family reasons, for its history, or because you admire the beauty of a certain countries stamps or the postal history. Choose the country/region/topic first and then narrow the focus maybe (e.g., classic era), so you can expand later or specialize. Then perhaps start with a small collection and/or use stock books before deciding on a permanent home for your stamps (e.g., album). You can buy individual stamps or, as I prefer, buy a starter collection or two from ebay seller and then fill in the holes.

Well, I'm not going to let the perfect be the enemy of the good, as they say.

The drawback with uniformity for me is that your albums start to resemble the contents of a lawyer's office (....) My French collection is beginning to look alarmingly uniform, however!

Ha Ha GeoffHa - good one!

But could never restrict myself to one region or area, too many tempting rabbit holes of interest to fall into and follow, much like Alice in (Philatelic) Wonderland.

- that comment made my day - I know exactly what you are trying to say, DJCMHOH -
