The package arrived yesterday with two $3 stamps among the postage, and none of the stamps got canceled. Without a cancel, they are 'unused' in philatelic terms and without gum, they are not mint. Even so, it is illegal to re-use 'unused' stamps.
We need to get one exception made. It should be illegal EXCEPT on mail addressed to the Postmaster General.
They'll start to get the message when they get flooded with mail bearing re-used postage.
FWIW there was a line I didn't want to wait in, but while one window clerk was stepping away to help a client, I asked for and got permission to use her canceler. Chunk, chunk, done.
One thing I do not get. Most collectors know by now that if you drop a letter in a box it will only get cancelled partially. So why not take it to a counter and have it cancelled the way it is supposed to?
