Hi members,

I have a envelope from London AD one penny Queen Victoria 1881 stamp with an inverted Liverpool cancellation. I appreciate your comments. Thank you.

Mara

Maybe these are most appropriate in the "I inherited a Collection, Start Here" section. Introductions are for, well...introducing yourself.

Hi Mara, and welcome to the forum. The cancel does not seem to be inverted, the stamp was put on the cover upside down. The question is if this was done on purpose?
By the way, where did the idea of inheritance come from in this case?

Peter

Hello Mara, The stamp could simply be put on upside down by accident, but the following is also possible. The position of a stamp in a certain way was sometimes used as a secret kind of language/message. Most often used between secret lovers. Upside down could mean: I love you, sideways could mean kisses. or tilted could mean I think of you. In the Netherlands it is known as Postzegeltaal. Roughly translated Stamp language. There are even postcards with Stamp Language. Kind regards, Johan.

The value of your stamp is that it is on cover. The stamp off paper would be worth possibly two pounds but on the cover you could easily triple that or more... especially with the squared circle Liverpool postmark. There may be further markings on the back. Worth researching anyway.

Sent to someone at J.S.Morgan & Co (Junius Spencer Morgan and Company) at 22 Old Broad Street, London who were merchant bankers. Still in existence today as Morgan Grenfell & Co
