Hi,
I have this old Australian Penny Red in my collection.

Could someone please advise if this is one of the rare sideways watermarks?

Unfortunately the back of the stamps gives little information, even after scanning it.

Many thanks

Soak it in cold water for about 10 minutes,
the Watermark will arrive, let us know what it looks like.

Tap lightly with clean dishcloth and place face up on a freezer bag, and a clean piece of paper on top, and place the "sandwich" inside a book for 2 days.
It will come out flat and the best condition possible.

Postmark : DARLINGTON New South wales.

I agree with agmasd56, it is a very poor scan, you will need to scan it at 300 dpi.

I seriously think scanning this stamp at any PSI will not help I'm with you Rod it needs a serious bath and once in the water the Mark will appear.
I use warm water as it tends to lift any hard grit and dirt when soaking, when a lot of stamps are soaked I place the stamps on an ironed pillowcase fill up 1/2 and then fold over to cover the stamps. Lucky I'm in Brisbane carry them out side books on top and dried in Minutes

Many thanks for your suggestions.

I have re scanned it, hopefully it will show a much clearer image.
