I have a #512 stamp with the letter R punched in it. Also a stamp with NYC punched in it. What does this mean?.

The other stamp is #941.

the R is part of GTR - a perforated initial for Grand Trunk Railroad - a perfin - google it

Thank you. What does this do to the stamp is it destroyed, normal, better. Is it still #512?

It is still 512. It is also now what is called a perfin. Perforated initials to deter employee from stealing the company postage. There about 21,340 varieties of U. S. perfins on some 42,351 values. They're popular.

Littleriver you are confusing counts for precancels with perfins. There are about 6,700 different varieties of US perfins, perhaps as many as 250,000 values - I don't think anybody has made a serious survey of how many values/denominations.

The #941 stamp is punched NYC. Is that New York City or New York Central Railroad?
