What part of a stamp is used to tell what color the stamp is? I see lots of dark and light areas in one stamp. A color chart has color and tints, what do I use?

John

A scan of the stamp would tell all.

Since most color charts show solid areas, you generally choose the largest solid area to compare to the color chart.

Your brain does some image processing when it comes color, which is why shaded areas don't always appear to be the exact same color as solid areas, even though the exact same color ink may have been used. This is why gray-scale conversion of color pictures still works remarkably well to convey images.

If there is no grill, which you did not mention, this would be Scott 65, in a rose shade. It comes with a wide variety of shades, the best being what is called "Pigeon Blood Pink." The true pink shades would make it Scott 64 or one of the small letter types. This is definitely not a pink shade, however.
