Nearly a quarter century ago, back when I didn't know all that much about revenue stamps (not that I know that much today), and especially didn't know about certain... traits of some stamp dealers, I bought the stamp shown below.

After some time, I sent it off for a certificate, and realized that I had just wasted $275 ($250 on the stamp, $25 on the certificate).

However, I did learn a(n expensive) lesson about a certain revenue stamp dealers' wares.

I don't think I should mention the business name, but you can probably guess.

Jim

I am a bit surprised that you didn't make buying it conditional to the getting the cert, or that you could not get the dealer to not take it back when the cert came back bad.

Well, I know all that stuff NOW, but in 1993 I don't think that I did.

Plus, this dealer would have probably just laughed at me.

Are those silk fibers in the paper?

Yes. All second and third issue revenues were printed on silk paper. Silk paper is only a scarcity factor on first issue revenues, and it's a different type of silk paper to boot.
