Alexey,
Is there a reason for the "traditional Russian harness of three horses" ?

"Troika" is a special harness for a long and fast ride. Two horses run at a gallop, and the central one runs trot. This method allows to run fast and long. It was used to deliver state mail or transportation of government officials for long distances between postal stations. It was a "racing car" of its time, it even had a "special signal" in the form of a ringing bell on the arch of the central horse.

Hello, Alexey, I found your Ryazan Kremlin on the map and it must be a very beautiful collection of buildings. The Dormition Cathedral is especially spectacular. In Germany we also have the day of Dormition on the 15th of August, but it is not celebrated everywhere. Have you ever been to Ryazan? Visited the museum? K.

In Scandinavia timber is often cut during the winter season because work is easier on frozen ground. Two stamps designed by the artist Sven Ljungberg mentioned last week and a snowy forest by Svante Hedin. (I did not find these on the "Trees" thread.)

In Norway some logging is still done with the help of horses in the winter. The Dřle Horse breed is an old breed and used for work on mountain farms and forests.

(Stamp of 1987; I didn't find it among the "Horses of course", but there are many there I cannot access.)

The Nordlands pony of Norway is ideal for children at any time of the year, and it can take winter weather on the pasture.

(Stamp 1987, not seen among the "Horses of course".

Here is a typical winter scene in the Niigata region of Japan: Tateyama Kurobe highway; 2013. And a photo from the area.

Hi Alexey, News of your heavy snowfall reached us; did it look a bit like this? K.

The Norwegian painter Axel Ende (1853-1920) was honored on a stamp in 1983 showing his painting of a merry sleigh ride. He must have known the folks and horses because they are featured in more than one of his works.

The Swedish landscape painter Per A. Persson (1862-1914) was honored in 1973 on a stamp showing his "Row of Willows" in winter. In southern Sweden rows like this are common along rural roads; they are trimmed every few years, which stunts the growth of the trunk but encourages the growth of many new shoots. (I didn't find these on the tree thread.)

A winter landscape by the artist Eugene Mousset (1877-1941) and another painting of his. Beautiful soft colors.
