Now that all the cards and letters have been mailed, the letter box can provide a bit of protection for a robin (1995). |

Helping the songbirds find enough food on cold winter days is a long tradition in many countries. In Scandinavia one ties up a sheaf of grain so that the birds can get at the kernels. |

Another sheaf of grain for the small birds, 1977. (This stamp may already have been presented among the engravers.) |

Hi, Alexey, That is a fantastic herd of Mammoths! The sculptor Kovalchuk made them look so very real. I found pictures of them and other great animals at Khanty Mansiysk on the web. Have you seen them? |

hi Kris! I wasn't in Khanty-Mansiysk (3 thousand kilometers away from me!) But in our snows there are also interesting creatures, the photo was taken 60 kilometers from Moscow |

For many animals winter is not only a season of cold, but it can also mean not being able to find enough food to keep warm. Sweden issued a beautiful set of stamps featuring animals who become as white as the snow; this one the forest hare. (Hi Alexey, I have always wanted to visit that beautiful Bialowieza national park, but seeing nature reports about the bison will have to do. K.) |

in the Bialowieza Forest bison (real name: zubr) live in the wild nature and I'm not sure that you will be lucky enough to see them but in the Moscow region they live in a small Prioksko-Terrasny reserve and they can always be seen |

Another Eurasian bison; usually it isn't the full-grown males that have problems in the coldest months of the year, especially when the snow is deep, it is more likely the young and the cows who are already expecting new young. One in a set of six animal stamps, 1957. (Hi Alexey, What does it say at the top of the stamp? K.) |

This series of stamps was made by the beautiful Russian animal painter Alexei Komarov. Inscription means: guard the useful animals. and a couple of animals in the snow |
