I believe this is China Yunnan Province Scott #41; London 1931-37 Overprinted A37 4c. The characters look more spaced out and thicker than in Scott. Comments welcomed. Thanks!

As with the Sinkiang overprint in your other thread, the overprint is slanted and the font is indeed different from what is show in Scott. However, the font is also different from that Sinkiang overprint that you had shown. That would make it less likely that both are fakes -- so again, I'm wondering if these are local overprints (if they exist). Again, hoping a China expert will chime in...

I don't recall ever seeing anything like this, but I'm no expert and I have to admit that in the past I never paid much attention to these overprints (I assume like everybody else, these overprints give me headaches).

@khj Thanks for the input. I hear you about the headache—there's a ridiculous amount of variations in China overprints. Seems like overprints makes up half the catalog. Guess it's more fun for me since I stare at code all day anyway as a software engineer…

And to think I switched away from Computer Science when I went to grad school to avoid the headaches! Little did I realize that those cryptic encoded symbols on little bits of colored paper would bring them back with a vengeance...

Personally, I think this is a bogus overprint. The overprint isn't of good quality in comparison to the genuine. I think it is an old counterfeit to fool the post office so that it can be used as postage.

@TangStamps Thanks for the comment! If so, looks like the post office got fooled on this one

Just curious: are you going off gut feeling or references? I'm thinking of sending this stamp, and about 10 others with similar nonstandard markings, to CSS: https://www.chinastampsociety.org/e...on-procedure
