Does anyone have any idea what would cause the unusual tagging on the 1468 stamp pictured below. Normal is just a single vertical bar in the middle. This one has two additional fairly uniform vertical bars to the right as well.

Mstocky, welcome to the forum. I am a collector that specializes in the Transportation Coil Series, including the tagging varieties, and I must honestly say that I have no clue. But you might want to send an Email to Wayne L. Youngblood. He writes a column for the APS journal and he is also the committee chairman of the luminescence workgroup of The United States Specialist.
I have his Email address but hesitate to give it for safety reasons - it is in the journal of the USSS

Thanks Peter for the response and welcome. Unfortunately I am not a member of USSS.

Mark, I sent you an Email with Wayne's address. Please let us know if you come up with an answer to both of your questions.

I checked about 70 used singles collected from a wide variety of sources of many years and found all to have normal tagging. This looks like a guide roller errantly picking up tagging and transferring it to the stamps.

As a tangent, I did find 3 copies of the 70 with misregistration poor enough to show the 2-tailed cat. A worthwhile evening!

Nice find. The one I posted is also a two tail cat, just doesn't show up real well in the tagging picture.

I had a chance to run this by Wayne Youngblood after his EFO class last week. His guess was that that tagging mat had curled and resulted is the tagging. At a stamp show lasted week I searched hundreds of these stamps including the stock from the dealer I original acquired this from with no other found. Something to search for out there.
