Well, Maybe not dirt common, but,... Almost all that were sold were used for either Philatelic covers or saved by collectors and I would say that the vast majority are still around 87 years later. There's always 50+ sets on ebay and I am sure making a few phone calls would scare up another 50 sets quite easily. If I can buy dozens and dozens of something in an hour then they're not rare. |

Does anyone have any idea of the relative availability of Zeppelin OG mint singles, versus those used, and those on cover?
I suspect the OG mint stamps are especially over-valued. |

There are probably more mint around than used, but there is also more demand for them mint. |

If I recall correctly, used has a higher catalog value with stamps that are less common used, such as Scott 39, and the various re-issues, such as Scott 125.
But with the Zepps it is just the opposite.

In my humble opinion, items as covers represent a far better bang for the buck then run of the mill mint singles.

From the 1953 Gimbels Stamp News:
C13-C15 mint: $110.00
C13-C15 used: $87.50
Each priced only as a set of three. |

I'd be curious to see this price trend measured against other issues where there is some scarcity.
My hunch is that perhaps the prices reflect general interest in this hobby, which peaked during the late 1980s and seem to have fallen since.
This is just a hunch, though, and I'm interested in what others would have to say about it. |

While the dollar inflation rate was high in the late 1970's, I believe that the big jump in Zeppelin values was more of a factor of tax treatment of capital gains in collectibles. Note the sudden drop when the tax treatment changed again in the 1980s. Inflation was high, but not nearly as high as the increase in Zeppelin values. |

If you want, I can pull the Scott values from more years tonight. I have a decent collection of catalogs running back to 1935. |

I think the Zeppelins are probably more rare than it seems from ebay. Most of the ones on ebay are buy it now listings that have been up for week after week, because sellers have them overpriced. It doesn't seem like there's a lot of heavy sells being made on ebay for these issues. |

Very interesting. Thanks for the chart Don. The Zeps are a special bunch, and the chart represents the market changes of the years. |

An observation from the 2017-18 Michel catalog where values are 1/2 compared with 2005. I watch auction prices on ebay and find that 1/2 - 1/4 Michel is common with Paraguay flights in particular seem to go for much more. |
