Pardon the inexperience on these, but I finally got that Stanley Gibbons catalogue in my hands Since they are considered major varieties, other than 7 being printed from the earlier SG1 plates and 8 from a newly designed set of plates, what are the differences to identification? Does it take a microscopic knowledge of the SG1 plates?

Hi svensson,

Yes, to identify a stamp as SG 7, you need to be able to identify it as coming from one of the 7 plates that were used to print both black and red stamps.

Unfortunately, there is no simple rule you can apply here.

Don't forget that the 1d black plates are individually identified on the Spink site

GeoffHa, many, many thanks for that link. It would be nice to have the Nissen book, but it's rare and very expensive. The descriptive books leave a lot open to interpretation, so you'll find a lot of Penny Blacks plated incorrectly. The site makes plating much easier.
